Portrait of a Glacier

by Kyle L. Krause

The light was dancing in an out of the clouds and it was raining. I found a little shelter under a large tree, and quickly set up my equipment. I was lucky enough to get a few shots before the rain really came down. The face of the Glacier is at least 100 ft plus. A picture does not capture its massive size. Perito Moreno Glacier. Patagonia, Argentina.
C&C Welcome.

Please see large version.

It would have been wonderful to have something (no idea what???) included in the frame for scale. Thanks for sharing. This would be a special addition to you anyone's files. I, too, am curious how you managed an all black sky?

Amazing light!
The lack of a reference for scale diminishes it a bit though.

kyle - nice colours - overcast conditions work best on these ice formations. i do find, though, that having a boat in the frame with the perito moreno allows the observer to appreciate the scale of the place. that being said, classic shot with the dark, shadowed BG.

Wow, this is fascinating! The ice almost appears transparent.

Ben and Lon,
There is a mountain behind the Glacier, no sky at all. The shadows were almost black from the storm.
Thanks

This takes on a very unique look with the bg aloud to fall to black. I like it!

amazing how dark the bg is. Great tones and light on the glacier and a fine comp, too. This is one of those shots that would really benefit from a reference for sense of scale - but you work with what you get and this is very nice

Simply amazing Kyle. Light and colors are wonderful here in this incredible image of nature. The surrounding darkness really makes this stand out.

Can't help but comment about the lack of scale - on the other hand, that lack of an element for scale is also what provides a great mystery here and that keeps people engaged and imagining....

Hi Kyle

I know the area and behind this perito front there's a mountain I don't see here, so I think you've darken the background to create an original photo from this impressive glacier.

I like it

Best regards

Spectacular glacier. You have captured the blue ice very well and unusual ice formation. For my taste, I find the black sky a bit disconcerting, would like to see some of these storm clouds to help provide some context and story to go with this.

I really like this photo. Unlike others, I do not need a sense of scale. To me, it is a wonderful abstract in nature. I know it's a glacier, and I don't need to know how tall this one is to appreciate the beauty and light in it.

You might experiment with cropping down from the top a bit. Just because your camera has a 2:3 aspect ratio doesn't mean the image wants to be the same. I think it might be even stronger with a little less negative space at the top.

Great photo!
