Kauai Blues

This is either a very pleasant scene or, perhaps, the dullest shot of the Kauai coast ever recorded on any medium, film or digital. I can't decide. But for the last few weeks I've been coming back to it from time to time and I continuously find it appealing. The ocean was so calm on this particular morning that the water lacks drama even in my short exposures (.5 seconds, etc.) a bit later on. Not quite what I had in mind heading out to this spot, but perhaps it was worth the effort in the end.

[Note that I changed the title a while after posting to incorporate an idea from a couple of the comments about the blues in the scene.]

Canon 5D, 17-40mm at 24mm; blend of two exposures (sky and water).

Love the soft feel and cool colors against the jagged stone, the juxtaposition works well together.

The blue of the water is what appeals to me the most. The rocks are pretty fascinating too. Looks quite primordial.

I really don't understand your indecision. It's wonderful! You could try cropping the sky (half of it) to further strengthen the composition. It would work both ways for me.

No, see, Phil, when you use Kauai and calm in the same sentence, you just repeat yourself. That water is gorgeous! Nicely done.

Certainly nothing dull here. I really like the shapes and colors. I could see cropping the sky a bit to create greater focus on the foreground elements.

I like that foreground. Will second the ideas regarding a crop of the sky.

I love it! I know I already said that!

I do think it might be a tad heavy on the left and would be tempted to try to crop it a tad for more balance.

WAY worth posting and printing! :toast:

Aaron, this is down on the shore near the "Spouting Horn" west of Poipu. My wife dragged me to the souvenier/jewelry stands there (I refer to this place as the "spouting wallet" for that reason) a few years ago and I thought at the time that this stretch of coast had some good photographic potential. I got a brief chance to explore it one morning during a return trip in June this year. It feels like a pretty wild location down by the water even though there's a parking lot for 50 cars or more just up the cliffs behind me.
