Cinnamon/GW Teal Hybrid

by Ron Dudley

This wing stretch was part of a lengthy and very enthusiastic bathing session.

Because of the darker "ear patch" on this bird resembling (in shape if not color) that of a Green-winged Teal some folks who are much more knowledgeable on duck ID than I am believe this to be a Cinnamon/Green-winged Teal hybrid - thus the title.

Larger version provided.

7D, 1/1600, f/6.3, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window at Bear River MBR on 5/30/10, cropped to 66% of original image, sharpened bird, no additional adjustments or processing, natural light

Comments/critique appreciated

Fantastic image of an already great bird. I like the green reeds in the background.

I've seen many BLue-winged x Cinnamon Teal hybrids here in AZ, but never this combination. A very interesting bird.

Image quality is first rate - as we expect from you.

Very fine capture of quite a revealing pose, Ron. I like that you used sufficient SS and ISO to capture all the motion here, including the water droplets. At the same time you managed to obtain this beautiful lighting and needed no post processing adjustment of exposure! :toast: :toast:

Ron:
Terrific shot. Great detail throughout the bird, but the sharpness and perfect exposure of the white and tan feathers of the right wing are particularly impressive. My attention oscillates between the wing and the vivid red eye. I was unaware of this hybrid. Fantastic light and good timing to catch the bird in this pose. Wish I felt that lively after a bath.

Ron,

This is a great image of this duck and it is even more interesting because it is a hybrid. The lighting is wonderful and the pose is too.

What a wonderful shot Ron, stunning was the first thought when I looked at the larger version, the lighting, wing spread and the red eye all help to make this shot, great job. One of the best Teal shots I have ever seen.
