Mangled Morpho

Walking through the Mall Of America yesterday, I discovered that they have an area called Butterfly Bay, a sort of butterfly petting zoo for kids. I spent about a half hour in there after work and got a few decent shots, but it was really sad to see the poor shape that so many of these butterflies were in. I guess it's to be expected, given that every kid who goes in there wants to pick up a butterfly on their finger, but there were some dead ones lying around, and even in the short time that I was there, one landed on the ground and was stepped on. It made me wonder how many butterflies a place like this goes through over time. It's that old paradox- on the one hand, I feel it's wrong to keep any living creature caged up (I have an especially soft spot for winged creatures- I could never keep a bird in a cage), but on the other hand, for these kids, and I guess even myself, it might be their only chance to experience these beautiful creatures, some of which are quite exotic. Here's a picture of blue morpho who's seen better days.

yes, butterflies were not really made for petting - looking and enjoying, yes, but petting no. there's an upside to this tale, though - butterfly cocoons are collected by local communities in areas surrounding or within patches of vulnerable forest in developing countries and then shipped around the world. the local communities get about $5/cocoon. this means that the people are earning income from the forest and, as a result, there is an incentive to protecting it. the butterflies are hatched in places like the one you found with the idea of educating people about butterflies from around the world. in theory, a win-win sitaution ... except for the poor critters that are petted!

Interesting photo, it is hard to get a morpho with wings extended. Have not been to the Mall of the Americas in years, but have managed a walk through butterfly exhibit and been to several more, most including the one I ran as part of the zoo do not allow visitors of any age to pick up a butterfly. It is OK if the butterfly lands on the visitor, but otherwise hands off. there are supposed to be trained staff in the exhibit area to protect the butterflies and to make sure no butterflies escape. It is a USDA regulation, or was at least 2 years ago when I retired. Thanks for sharing the photo.

Thanks for sharing the photo and story, Tim. This butterfly is showing signs of wear, but so are many wild ones after enduring harsh weather and would-be predators. A more illustrative photo would have included a human element to show what is going on with the story. This would be a good illustration if accompanied by a photo of people handling the butterflies.

thanks all for the info and suggestions. I guess I can't say for sure if it was a "petting zoo" per se- they may have rules about touching the butterflies, but I didn't see them posted nor was I given any instructions upon entry. It seemed like every child who came in was trying to get one to land on their finger, or even chasing them around, and the employees never said a word. It's good to hear the upside to the tale, though- i.e., financial benefits to developing communities, etc. It's a funny thing too- as I was thinking to myself how these parents shouldn't be letting their children touch the butterflies, a blue morpho actually landed on my forehead and stayed there for about 10 minutes! On little boy called me "the butterfly whisperer" which I thought was hilarious, and I was able to find someone to take my picture so I could share the moment.
