Monument Rocks Despoiled

Monument Rocks is a National Natural Landmark, located in western Kansas. Cretaceous chalk formations rise up to 70 feet from the Kansas prairie. The classic photo op, especially for tourists, is standing in this large oval window. Not anymore :(. My wife and I made the 2.5 hour trip out to Monument Rocks, arriving after dark. Walking around, waiting for the moon to come up, my wife happened to point the flashlight out into the pasture, where it reflected off of the truck. I took this photo in the pre-dawn light, feeling extremely blue about the whole situation. Even though I prefer one of the other rock formations for my night photography, it really bothers me that they are drilling this close to one of Kansas' "Eight Natural Wonders". The rig is only a few hundred feet at most from the Rocks. This oil company is drilling all across this part of the state. This rig was not there a month ago when I last visited the Rocks.

Its all about money. What a shame, that so many value the dollar over natural beauty. Thanks for the pic.

That's a total BUMMER. This certainly does ruin one of the best views here. You would have thought since it is one of the Eight Natural Wonders, they would have given a little more thought to allowing drilling right in this particular spot. Guess the only important thing is the $$. It's a damn shame...

Not much you can say about this, photography is good, story is saddening. Thanks for showing us this blight.

Rob, I think I recall seeing some of your earlier images from around this general area, again, my best recollection. This truly is an eye-sore and is seemingly uncontrollable sites across our fine nation as well as the rest of the world. Congratulations at least on the EP selection for this image, but wish it were for a bit more of a positive view. Possibly a view of dismantling this man-made erector set, so to speak.

I am continuously astounded by the man made stuff that I find in so many of my photos. From trash to power lines, it's everywhere. I didn't notice it so much before I started photography. Too bad everyone doesn't notice it more...maybe there would be an uprising.

A very compelling image Rob. For photographers it speaks volumes about the tenuous balance we must maintain by relying on the very processes we abhor to pursue our passion.Congrats on the WP honor.

What a shame, i can't comprehend the insane mindset behind such things...
Congrats on the EP, an excellent pic and story, Rob.
