Government at Work

Location here is the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. This spot has always been a pinnacle for me as I hike the five mile round trip trail at the southern end of the refuge. Normally as I would come out of the woods the scenery would open up into this wide open space full of wildlife and numerous species of water fowl. The Important Bird Areas Program has stated that over 270 species of migratory birds and 100 different species of song birds use this refuge throughout the year. During peak populations in the fall up to 25000 geese and 40000 ducks are present in the refuge.
Now, in an effort to "promote exercise" the Government has decided to build a road through the refuge. This is the scernery I now came upon after exiting the woods. To the right of the "road" is usually a water way full of islands and water as far as the eye can see. This same weekend one year ago I hiked to this spot and watched thousands of birds using this pool. This year I found heavy equipment and a few Egrets wading in the mud. The wildlife was almost non-existent.
Below I will include a photo I took late Winter earlier this year to show what it usually looks like. The water fowl was not present yet and I took the photo from an observation tower that is no longer their.
And Yes, their reason for building over seven miles of roads throughout the refuge for cars and trucks, "is to get people outside and exercise."

Here is a photo of the same location about four months ago.
Thanks for looking and allowing me to share my disappointment.

It would've been nice if they built a trail head and let people walk into the refuge, but "human wisdom" has taken over with - "why not let them drive in!" Can we be any farther from nature? I have walked/hiked access roads like this in the past only to have vehicles stop and their drivers ask me if I am lost or need a lift - not really promoting exercise in my opinion. Its sad and I feel your disappointment.

Something like this makes no sense to me. After all are we not supposed to be weaning ourselves off of oil! The photos and the story are interesting.

Classic Government... I bet this was a "shovel ready" project. Congrats on the well earned EP.

I think it would be interesting if you made a tryptic of this scene on the left, the shot below in the middle, and then another shot of it finished at the end. It would really be powerful in the right context. Thanks for sharing.

I'm really surprised the DNRE would allow this much damage to be done in one of our refuges, and it saddens me. Thanks for sharing, John.

I hope they paved the road otherwise tourists will be complaining about the dust as they drive through the refuge. Great capture.

Interesting, and not in a good way. What an unfortunate project. Reminds me of Ed Abbey's diatribe in Desert Solitaire against road construction projects in Arches NP (then a national monument).

How pathetic... a sad situation for sure.
Good documentation of this mess - perhaps this image could be used in a organized
protest?
Congrats on the EP, as hard as it is to see.. !

Wow, John. I live in Saginaw and used to spend a lot of time in the Shiawassee NWR. I haven't been in there for a couple years and am astounded by this. Why? And what a stupid $ expenditure. What was wrong with the existing gravel road through the refuge that allowed "excercise" by bicycle or foot? We now get to exercise our ankles and feet by pushing on accellerator and brake pad? In the meantime, destroying the habitat? Ironic that we call it a "refuge."

And David, they already had a trail head with a nice parking area, excluding vehicles from the refuge. You have to wonder what (if?) they are thinking??????
