Wild Horses

Here's another image from our trip to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon. As we were headed out on the last day of our trip a herd of about 12 wild horses posed for us for quite sometime in the mid morning sun, it was a fine way to end the trip. I figured I would need a very small aperture to get all the horses in focus and I was handholding so I decided to selectively focus with a fairly large aperture on the front horse who seemed to be standing guard. Full frame.

MkIII 500F4 1/3200 F5.6, iso 400, evaluative metering -0.3, handheld out car window.

Nate, This has the look and feel of a David Cramer image-may he rest in peace. Very nice soft blues, they add a lot to the image. Nice group shot.

Lovely image...like the way the OOF horses created a depth in this image...it would have been good if you could get a frontal view of both the OOF horses and a bit of separation between them.

I love the soft light and the natural colors here Nate. I think your choice for a large aperture was a good one, as with that long lens you would never (even at your smallest aperture) get the other horse in sharp focus as well. What does bother me a bit is the pose/presence of the third horse with only its back visible and overlapping with the foal. The main subject would also do well on its own with a bit tighter framing IMO.

The foreground horse and the background foal offered nice poses. I agree with Vincent about the background mare that is offering only a butt view. Your technical choices work fine, especially noteworthy that you did not have a band of oof foreground.
