Grasshead + repost

The backlighting of this grasshead caught my eyes when I was out looking for dragonflies at Jardine Lookout last Sunday morning.

D90 300mmF4 1/60 F11 tripod cable release. BG darkened, contrast, hue and saturation adjustments in PS. The BG was not really dark blue but it seems show off the grasshead. Would be interested to hear if this works for you.

It works well for me Gary. Well seen, captured, processed and presented. For my tastes, this is really good photography and a striking image as posted. That said, what would you think about removing the horizontal green band? I can't decide. I don't feel strongly enough about it to make it a suggestion. Superb image, whatever you decide about the green horizontal. I'll be interested in other opinions on it.

Oh yeah Gary, this definitely works for me. Beautiful flora/macro. One very minor nit might be that the composition isn't centered nor is off- center enough to seem intentional. I think I would prefer it centered. As for Pats comment on the green band, I like it. It provides a sense of layers in the bg I find interesting. But I think it would still be an excellent image without it. The lighting is superb, nice job.

I really like the backlit grasshead, Gary. IMVHO, the background distracts from the subject, especially the green band. I would suggest reworking the image to eliminate that.

Ciao ;^)

Works great for me. This is wonderful, from the detail of the grasshead to the color and bokeh of the background. Very nice work.

Gorgeous lighting and I like the simplicity in this. I agree with doing something about the green band.....not so much about the color but the fact that it is a defined shape unlike the rest of the BG....perhaps breaking it up a bit?

I think this is superb! Great backlight and the grass head is in perfect condition. As to the green band I think I would like to see it run all the way to the bottom of the frame or not be there.

I really think this is sensational. :toast:

Gary, this is just really excellent!
Great light, detail, and BG. I don't mind the green stripe at all.
But, for this image - and I rarely say this - I think dead-center would be best. As is, it's just a bit off-center, and more might look very odd.

really nice shot here....almost glows in its isolation. nice work

Great BG as everyone has commented. Lately I have had more of an eye on potential backgrounds than foregrounds.

Gary.

I like it much better without the band. Very nice job on the processing for the rework. Beautiful image.

I like the first version... great use of lighting and the details are so fine (with those tiny cobwebs reaching toward the stem)

Gary,

This is amazing. The backlighting brings out such an awesome glow in the grass head. And I do like the reworked repost better.

Gary: Great eye and a great capture. The BG is especially complementary and the detail in the head is spectacular. Superior image. I like the original about 1% better than the repost.>=))>

I am glad I came back for a second look. I would have bet in advance that I would prefer the rework without the band, but having seen both I much prefer the original version. Part of it may be the slightly off center position of the flower too, but I lingered a long time over the first version and the second one is a quick "oh that's nice" and move on.

The first version has a special quality beyond just the backlit seed head. The second is more ordinary.

Peter

p.s. Ok I came and looked for a third time and now I like them both. Maybe it was expectations, or maybe I'm just not so good at this...

Beautiful image either way :toast:

Exquisite detail and lighting, Gary - beautiful image !! Like the repost but I do think the original is fine too - the more varied bg somehow looks good to me.
