Alces alces

Ron Dudley and I went up camping in the high Uintas in July looking for birds and we came across this young moose. We stopped the pickup along side the road hoping to get some clear shots of it feeding on a hillside. The moose came closer to the truck rather than moving away so I took some closeups of it nibbling on willows.

D200, f7.1, 1/320, ISO 400, 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at about 280mm, late afternoon light, 90% of original frame, larger version posted.

I sincerely appreciate your comments and critiques, thank you for looking

Great close-up and nice sharpness. I like all the detail. The lighting is slightly harsh but it's not like you could have asked the moose to move into a different spot.

Good portrait, I like the composition and detail (even the fly on the velvet antler), well done.

Your composition of an unusual face is excellent. I like how the head and neck angles make a triangle, and how the neck, nose, ears and antlers point to the respective corners. The bit of light catching the near eyelashes is a great accent. I assume you have already opened the shadows a little, so won't suggest you try to brighten them more. Good image.

Wow! I fauna post from Mia????Thought I was in the wrong forum for a minute... Sorry Mia, had to be a smart elec since I don't think I have ever seen anything but an avian shot from you! Nice job with this portrait. I have been looking for bulls to photograph for 2 years and can only manage cows, so glad to see you were fortunate! The details on the larger version look terrific :toast:

Welcome to fauna gallery, Mia ! I too had a same reaction as Kurt.
Fine composition n details here, I wonder if it is possible to open up more details?
I may be tempted to clone out that twig on the neck.

Tough light but you managed it very well Mia..
Great comp, color, DOF, BG, and details. Like the little fly on its antler, even like that very tiny fly buzzing nearby too..Adds some realism:wink: I'd clone out the small twig at its neck though.
Lets not get too real :)
Well done :toast:

Very nice portrait and decent light. As we photographers know, we set out for something specific at a specific time and place, only to be surprised by something equally or more interesting.
