Canon 7D, 500mm, 1/640, f8, ISO 400, 28% FF

Not a very good year for Hummingbirds this year in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. The spring and early summer was cold and wet which was probably hard on them. This was taken July 1ST.

A gorgeous Gorget and nice angle on this bird. Unfortunately it has suffered quite a bit from the large crop - I would suggest backing off and giving us a nice composition, there is no rule that says the subject must take up the whole frame.

Detail looks very good to me, at this size. I like the clean green background for this bird. With the wing extending behind the bird it has the bulk of his body to the right of the midline of the frame; so I would like a bit more room in front of the hummer and then a bit more below for balance. I know what you mean about the spring, I saw very few warblers this spring - very worrying to me!

Detail around head and gorget is superb Dan. I'd probably prefer a bit more around it to provide a little bit of context.

cheers

Beautiful, Dan. I like the degree of blur and it's nice and sharp. Good angle to get the refractions from the gorget. :toast:

Cool! I like the DOF with this body angle, it makes the head really 'jump out' (don't know how better to describe it, but I hope you catch my drift). Pity about a very heavy crop, but this is worth it. :toast:

The light on the gorget is lovely and I love the motion blur of the wings.

Great gorget on this hummer. The crop as is gives a very interesting 3-D effect. Almost appears that the head is in front of the plane of the photo. I don't think you've lost anything. Well Done.
