Strange Blue Sky

The rest of the sky was almost cloudless blue, but this "tornado" looking white and pink cloud grew out of this storm cloud until it looked like this scene in only one portion of the sky....like a white tornado.

What a fantastic sky!

I see some blotchiness in various places in the image. I've seen this sort of pattern in some of my own pictures, and I find it bothersome, but don't know how to correct it

I think this looks smoother. Plus I love to frame my photos

You struck a nerve with the tornado comment--as a meteorologist i have to field calls all the time from folks who see a tornado in every peaceful cloud!
Anyhow, it looks like an interesting sky. I think if you appled some noise reduction to get the larger version smoother like the repost, id like it more. The overexposed portions are still a bit problematic, but i think i could live with the highlites being blown if it weren't for all the color problems here--it sort of looks like a color conversion went bad here, you might want to check your color profile and ensure the conversion to web process doesnt gum it up. Some potential here--but needs refinement. :wavey:

Stan,

yeah, I had to live with the highlights being blown, but I loved this scene. Which color profiles appear to be off? Remember , I'm just a "greenhorn" photographer. Lots to learn!

Lucy,

You've sure captured a phenomenal set of clouds and atmospheric event. The pan crop and the silhouetted bank of trees make for a solid composition.

I think the "color profile" Stan is referring to would be the "sRGB" color profile for the web, or wondering what your working color space is - that kind of profile. Other than some cyan fringing around some clouds on the right, the colors look fine in your image.

The repost looks much cleaner as the original looked a bit more noisy and also I think both versions are suffering a bit from jpg compression. This also gets back to Stan's point about some additional "refinement." I think an image like this with lots of sky with limited colors and detail, you should be able to save this under the 200k without getting much data loss or compression artifacts.

Depending on what your original looks like, there may be some things you can do to mitigate the highlights - but if they're blown, they're blown.

Feel free to let us know what photo editing software you're using, if any and in the future we could maybe provide some more specific suggestions.
