Feeding time

Gallery: AvianPosted August 20, 201099 views15 comments
My name is Geoffrey Baker and this is my first upload, I joined today.

This was taken through my living room window in Wales, UK, hand held, the birds were on a feeding station about 3 metres from the glass.

They are of course Great Spotted Woodpeckers, the father is feeding his chick.

Minolta 7D, Sigma 50-500 EX, 1/1000th second, f6.3, ISO 400, +0.3 stop exposure compensation, centre-weighted metering, 330mm with a crop off the bottom only.

Please feel free to comment on this photo

Sweet shot showing a nice interaction. It's a shame the lighting wasn't a bit better. Welcome to the avian gallery - you will fit in nicely.

Welcome to NPN, Geoffrey. A very neat first post. You handled the exposure of the backlit subjects very nicely-even a tough of a reflection in the juvenile's eye. I like the contrasting poses of the birds and the perch is great. I look forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:

Thanks guys, I've got loads of shots in my archives to share, so lots more to come.
I'll get around to looking at all your photos too, it's still a bit new to me on here

Welcome Geoffrey. You had some challenging light but I really like the behavior you caught. Interesting how the adult tips its head to make the food transfer more efficient. Post often and comment even more often on the images of others and you'll learn a bunch around here.

First off, "Welcome to NPN," we believe the NPN site and it's galleries exhibit the finest nature images on the web and are happy to have you as a member. Secondly, what a beautiful posting of the spotted woodpecker and chick. This has so much going for it besides the obvious capture of feeding. I love the dad's head turn and relationship of the chicks open beak. The colors and detail along with the moss/lichen perch and great OOF BG all make this a great image. Looking forward to more of your work! :toast: :toast:

Very nice post, I would like to see more of the parents face, just because I have never seen this bird. Thanks for sharing and welcome to NPN.

Geoffrey

Welcome to NPN's Avian Critique gallery. It is a great place to learn and share techniques.

Nice first posting, love the interaction between the birds. Great textures on the branch they are perched on too.
