Rising Shadow

by Karsten Wrobel

Gallery: LandscapePosted August 22, 2010478 views28 comments
It slowly forms as the sun rises… at first barely perceivable, but then clearly visible above the sea and clouds to the west…… the shadow of the peak, the very point where you are standing…

This image was taken from the top of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok (immediately east of Bali), which at roughly 12,500 ft is Indonesia's second-highest volcano…
Trekking here was for me the highlight of my recent trip… getting to the top takes about 10 hrs of walking… the final part is a relatively tough slog across loose scree…
... but no, you are unlikely to have the view to yourself at the top…

Thanks for your c&c.

Wow, what a neat view! The shadow of the Volcano fits into the landscape perfectly, almost like another distant mountain, and the clouds balance it perfectly. I love the horseshoe lake as well, fills the midground with plenty of interest. Well done!

What a wonderful view, and great shot. The shadow is really cool and it almost does look like another mountain. Love the clouds and light. Nice work.

Totally awesome! Man this has to be one of the craziest spots to photograph. Awesome job with the shadow, never seen anything quite like it.

Majesty of the creator is very clear here, I like the color here very much because it is real. I would remove the bottom 1/4 of the image to get rid of the near mountain (cover it with your hand & you will see a big difference).

Thanks Karsten for this grand landscape view.

Wow! What perspective. You handled the shadows and sun well. Imposing view and sweep of the horizon. Well done!

That shadow is very impressive indeed. If anyone is a math wiz, they could likely figure out how far away your shadow was given the angle of the sun, and the time beyond sunrise to calculate the degrees above the horizon that the sun was.

I too find the foreground hillside to stick out a bit more than I would like, but you didn't have much choice with that. A crop off the bottom would certainly help though.

This is really amazing. The shadow and that little patch of light is what make this work.

That looks pretty close to heaven for me. Beautiful shot with all the colors, the drama of the sunrise and the work to get there. All make it worthwhile. Congrats on this one Karsten.

Wow Karsten. That is EPIC. I did to Rinjani...but never climbed. Still in my point and shoot era...some years ago :) The image is full of graphism and it really looks like another planet. The focal point given by the shadow is top notch and also tells very nicely the story about the shot. Well done man.

Wow that is incredible! The view into the crate is spectacular enough; the summit shadow puts it over the top! (no pun intended! )

Absolutely stunning! I do agree with the crop suggestion, but more than anything I am in awe of all the detail - the light, clouds, and crater - and how you handled the exposure. Just awesome. :jump:

thank you for your comments, everyone.
I had thought about a crop from the bottom, but decided against it both to have greater depth and to have the full circle crater in the frame... I appreciate the suggestion.
