Juvie Solitaire

This is a juvenile Townsend's Solitaire. I think that their briefly held juvenile plumage is interesting and attractive, so I was glad to get some chances with them.

This was taken using my new tripod (gitzo w/ wimberley head), and with this SS, would not have been possible with my monopod. As it is, I should have bumped the ISO a bit for more DOF, I did a second round of sharpening on the lower half of the bird, as it is not as sharp.

Your comments and critiques are appreciated. Please view the larger version if possible.

Canon 7D, 500mm +1.4x TC, tripod, set up perch

1/25, f/8, ISO 400.

Minor crop to 88% (15.9 of 18MP)

Very nice! I've never seen any but adults and this would be a thrill.

Great looking youngster Brian, nice focus on the head, I agree with you about a little more dof in this pose. :toast:

Good shot of a juvie TOSO. I didn't realize they bred as far south as your country. These can be a very tough bird to find. I agree with Nate that a little more DOF would make this a killer shot.

I've never seen a juvie like this either, Brian. I'm with you that they are quite attractive this way. Wonderful detail and bg.

Nice over the shoulder glance, plumage patterns about the head and back, and I like the background colours. The extra sharpening on the lower hlaf may have accentuated noise in the larger image.
