Lilies in a vase

Nikon D300, 50mm, F/11, 0.62sec, ISO 200.

It was too windy outside, so I cut the stem and brought them inside. Then put them on my bay window and used a white background. The light was nice, but do the tiles distract the viewer? Comments appreciated.

Albert,

The tile isn't working for me. I like the composition but the image isn't coming together for me and I do think it's mostly the tile and the border between the tile and the wall. When I cover that part of the image, I prefer the result. Interesting. I don't really understand it.

Albert, its not so much about the tiles not working but more of something like a medium or darker shade of nice veined wood or velvet clothing etc etc would have more appeal. Lilies seem to be in superb shape here and love the cream colored tones in the frame. If these are still around, experiment with different bases.

Albert, I like the evenness of the tone. And yes, I think the tiles are a real distraction. You hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

Shouldn't be too difficult to remove those tiles, even though they are nice and clean

Cheers,

Carol

I don't mind the tiles at all. I think they work well with the pattern in the vase. The edge between the tiles and the background could use a little cleanup. This looks like incandescent light, was it? I might try a cooler white balance.

Albert: The tile doesn't move me one way or the other but I do like the vase and the subject and the lighting. Nicely done. >=))>

Hi Albert.

To be honest with you, the tiles are not really working for me. Also, seeing the bits of light peaking in from under the BG is a bit distracting. I like the look to the flowers, and the light is nice.

I might bump up the brightness on the whole shot a bit (or play with white balance as Mark suggested).

I have to agree with you that the tiles are a bit distracting. It's a great subject with loads of potential and the shot, even with the tiles, is quite nice. But I'd go with a different "studio" arrangement next time.

Albert:
The upper 2/3 of the image is fantastic. No too keen about the tiles.

I love the tiles in this image. They add interest to the image and as Mark said, they work well with the pattern in the vase. I also like the colors and arrangement of the flowers.

Mark said "This looks like incandescent light, was it?" The warm glow was created by a orange reflective panel. Thanks for your kind comments Mark.

A lovely portrait of the lilies, Albert. I think the lines of the tile disrupt the harmony of the light and color, maybe?

The tiles don't bother me either. Beautifully composed and rendered.
