I decided to join the party. This is my first post to introduce myself. I am looking for critiques to improve my photography, so C&C are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is a picture of a frog laying on a lotus leaf, taken at a local park.

Camera: SONY A900
Lens: 70-400mm @ 400mm

Welcome to NPN! This is the greatest place I know of to learn nature phtography!

I like the composition, color and detail of this photo. I like the meniscus of water on the lily pad, giving a sense of the liquid environment. My only nit is the partial pad on the left. It is just unnecessary to the composition

Very nice image. I agree with everything Philip said. The small piece of lily pad on the left doesn't really bother me, but it would make the composition a little cleaner.

Welcome on board, John! This is a callenging place where you can learn a lot.

Nice first post: good compo and colors. Yet I share Phil's remark.
In future remember to enclose a "larger version" for a better evaluation of the image and all the relevant technical info. :wavey:

Hi John and welcome to NPN.
I like the image as posted, but agree it would be a bit stronger graphically without the partial pad. The problem would then become the fading stem disappearing into the depths. I think I'd leave it as is.
Cool shot! I'll look forward to seeing more of your images.

Your choice of exposure is very nice. I like this as posted and don't find the partial pad to be a significant distraction. IF it were not in the frame, I would think the frog should then be a little higher in the frame, moving the eye slightly out of center. The dark water and rich greens are very effective.
Welcome to NPN. I look forward to your participation! Please take a few moments and share your reactions to some of the other postings!

Hi John and welcome to NPN :wavey: . This is very nice and well done. I do not really mind the parial pad on the left. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that the image is not level. Perhaps that was done intentionally, but it just does not feel natural to me seeing water out of level  .
You came to the right place to learn about photography John and from experience I can say that one can learn as much, and probably even more, from critiquing other people's images, so don't hesitate to jump in and comment on other images.

Beautiful image with lovely rich colours and a neat exposure.
Personally, I do not think the leaf on upper-left to be a distraction. In fact I feel that its presence adds a lot to this image.

HI, John, and welcome to NPN. Cool first post. I like the story it tells: the perfect amphibian environment- wet; the support and relaxation the frog enjoys from the leaf; froggie is heavy enough to sink the leaf, which the water tension lines delineate so well. As to the controversial partial pad on the left- too bad there aren't more partials in the frame for some balance and "biodensity," but it seems just fine as is to me.

Welcome to NPN John! This is a fine first post :toast: Ihave to say, the additional pad doesn't bother me at all. It even makes me feel, the frog is ready to jump to it if he desires. I do however agree with Vincent about the angle of the shot. At first glamce, I think a little lower abngle (if that was possible) would be nice, but more importantly, the shot not being level is what is most distracting. It is an easy fix to rotate this and IMO, I think it would make a stronger image. Look forward to seeing more from you! :toast:
