Sanderling

Shorebirds are beginning to return here! On the same afternoon as the WATA, a few SAND's were with them, and kneeling on this "beach", they soon returned close to me. Since, this area has a sewage discharge pipe and it's a jetty (the end is 4 miles out and I am about 3/4 of the way at this spot), I wasn't prepared to lie on my belly to get a lower angle at this beach!

Also, I should explain that there is a flat gravel path all along the jetty housing the sewage pipe, and riding a bicycle out is quite easy. The Rapid Strap certainly is the best harness that I have come across for this purpose, and carrying the 300mm f2.8 with camera attached is not a problem (the 500mm would be too heavy probably). The problem is clambering down to the "beach" over sharp rocks!

1D MkIV, 300mm + 1.4X, 1/1000 @ f8, ISO800, handheld, overcast sky early afternoon.

Thanks for looking; C & C please.

Sweet shot, Kwan. I like the feeding behavior and the setting. The wave in the background adds to the scene. :toast:

I love sanderlings KC and this little feeding, puffball is not only well executed in all respects, it is very appealing to me. Well done.

I'm with Mia. I like sanderlings and you made a good photo of one. They certainly don't pose very long for a nice portait like this

I like this very much. The low POV and the behaviour of the subject are great.

Congrats

Very nice composition and I like how the bird is poking around in the sand with a brief glimpse of the water in the background, well done.

Nice and crisp. Like the low angle a lot for this bird.
Doesn't your camera swing around with the rapid strap on a bicycle?

Yes, it does minimally - I make minor adjustments to move it to my lower back as I ride. I'll experiment the next time with a strap to "pull" the camera and lens to the lower back area. But, it has to be easy to uncouple for that sudden photo opportunity!

This is a great looking shot, KC. Wish I had some shorebirds around here--all I see are Spotted Sandpipers on black sewage lagoon liners....

I really like the look of this shot. Neat behavior, beautiful sand setting, nice exposure, and the mid-molt plumage is a big plus for me. :toast:

Well done KC. Love the feeding action and the uniformity of the sand in the FG. Nice sharpness and detail on the bird.

Well the scramble down the rocks was worthwhile because you have captured this sanderling beautifully.

The exposure on this looks great to me Kwan! I like the non-static look of the image as well.
