You will have to excuse me, I am just learning to identify butterflies so will someone attach a species name to this. It was taken at the arboretum on the north edge of Key West. We have been retired for six months and have put on over 20,000 miles. One place we spent some time was in the Keys during the month of march.

Canon 30D
Sigma 70-300 in macro mode
Aperture Priority
Shutter 1/750
Aperture 9.5
ISO 400
Hand held

Thank you for your comments.

Gulf fritillary,Agraulis vanillae. At least this was an easy one, Wait 'til you start trying to id the skippers

I would have expected the light to be harsher than it is so you handled it well.

Thanks for posting.

ID = what Dan said. My initial ID was Orange Butterfly
I really like the crop here and how you placed the butterfly in the frame. Nice details and colors. I would have liked to see a cleaner background but that's just me.

Nicely done. :toast:

Very nice capture Richard. Actually I think I like it better before you took out the out of focus vegetation. At any rate both are very nice.

I prefer the original posting, the image is sharper and the OFF plant material is not significant IMHO. Thanks for posting.

Hey Richard, very nice details and nice contrast of the b-fly on the whites and blue BG. I do like the repost with the cleaner BG
