Fringed Gentian (theme)
by Wayne Jones
This plant (rare in my area) grows only in sunny places, and opens only when the Sun shines, so I chose this shot, even though I have others that I shot using a diffusion screen to create artificial shade. I did use a reflector to fill in the shadows. I liked the way the bud growing next to the open flower reveals how the fringe is stored before it blooms.
P.S. One nice thing about shooting in bright sunlight is that it often casts deep shadows on the background, making for a nice natural separation of tones between subject and background.

(My first photo outing since I started chemo -- got over a week off from hospital stays. Had to stop many times to rest on the way back. Should have waited for my next transfusion, but could not resist when I heard they were blooming just minutes from home. Glad I went!)

I am glad you went out to photograph these, Wayne. This is a marvellous result. Fringes are clearly seen and what a nice addition that Bud is. Between the bloom and the bud, the story is almost complete. And that light is just about perfect.
I love the spiraled fibers in the bud. As usual the composition is superb, and very nice bokeh too. Gotta love that Sigma 150.
Glad you went and share this rare capture with us. It such a treat for the eyes. Can admire this for hours.
Take care.

All the best for your health

What I like best about this is there's a feel of fabric to the flowers.
Hang in there my friend,
Carol
I like this one very much, light and colours are superb.

Congrats on the EP and this shot. Simply stunning... the opened flower is beautiful in and of itself, but tack on that bud and you have a real winner (literally). Another inspiring shot of natural flowers in nature.

I LOVE the unopened bud with the fringe just showing. The inclusion of this really helps the viewer understand the process of unfolding. It is the kind of subject that gets the viewer thinking about the future and the growth that is happening in the very near future. I also think the unopened bud with fringe just starting to unfold would make a wonderful subject all by itself. Perhaps something to shoot next year...
