What intriques me about this hydranga is the detailed florascape of the lacecap bloom. It appears to me a new world. What i was trying to accomplish in this image was protray one of secrecy, intimacy and mysteriousness. Does it work?

Canon 5D mkII 90mm T/S

All comments and critiques welcomed but, what I really would like know is what works well and what could/should be done to take the image to a higher level.

Thanks for looking

Yes, it does work. The edge-on perspective works, and the miniature landscape supporting the blossome really makes the picture. Well seen.

Bob: What especially pleases me is the light and shadow play as well as the subject matter itself. I've not shot much hydrangea and when I have I've not been very pleased with the results. Perhaps a tiny bit more light on the right side would be better but not so much as to equalize it with the left side. I think the gradient gives this a certain allure that more even lighting would diminish. Well seen, conceived and captured. >=))>

Hi Bob, I think you accomplished your goals very well.

I would suggest adding just a bit more canvas on the right. I think if you were to crop from the left, you would only end up turning this into a mundane picture. I think turning this into a panoramic 9x16 would be awesome. My 2-cents LOL

Overall, I like this lighting very well along with the single bloom. But a little bounce back into the scene would be great.

Works well for me Bob. I like the way you captured such nice detail throughout the photograph and the black BG really makes the image standout. :toast:

Bob,

I like the comp for the most part. I might crop in a little from the left but I'm not sure about that. I'd probably lighten the ride side a bit. The light is fine but nothing that really grabs me and causes me to say Ahhhh... The subject is interesting to me. Ideally for my tastes the back petal would be in sharp focus - I'm guessing you'd have to stack to accomplish that. There's not enough strong pattern or rich color in this to really get my attention. These are of course pretty much all subjective assessments on my part. I do like the concept of the image but find it weaker than your initial light box series, all of which I liked very much.

Bob:
I like this. The edge effect on the single bloom alone with a black bg is enough to carry this image and the buds at the bottom is a nice addition. I support the idea of a crop from the left. Nicely conceived and captured.

Bob, what a killer composition and shooting angle  . No big suggestions from me but a little bit of light (weaker than what is coming from the left) from the right might have helped here.

An inspired composition, Bob ! Beautiful colouring and lovely detail and colour in the buds. I only wonder whether the furthest petal edges might take extra dof - but that may not have been possible anyway. The mood engendered by the high contrast lighting is one almost of fantasy to me - certainly something along the lines you aimed for.
