Kingfisher

I was sitting in my car watching this perch because there will always be some sort of bird perched on it. This kingfisher came over to get a better vantage point to look for dinner. The light was fading so the photos of him fishing didn't come out that great. He was a fast little bird but gave me some nice portraits.

Canon 7D 300mm f/4 at ISO 800 f/4 1/500 sec.

These guys are tough. You've captured a nice pose on a nice perch. Great BG as well. There seems to be a blue color cast on the back and head. Could be because of the late light in shadow which is often blue.

Edited comment: An easy way to remove the blue cast is to add a Hue/Saturation layer in Photoshop. Select the Blue Channel and move the saturation slider to the left until you achieve the desired colors. I think you'll be pleased with the result.

David I like the comp, but agree with Keith that this image has some color correction that is needed. I think the colors are a bit oversaturated throughout. Also, the blue color cast that Keith mentions. It would be nice to know how large a crop this is and if you applied any NR as the detail in the bird and perch is less than I would like to see. I hope you take these comments as a way to improve this image and your future work. Cheers.

I applaud your patience for getting this...I have a perch I've been parking near and no luck so far...these birds are sooooooo shy and very smart. Agree with the comments made so far and think a reduction in sat. would really help this. Hope you go back! Sharon

I made a few adjustments to saturation and NR. I am not sure why I boosted the sat so much. I was taking photos of either the same or another kingfisher in the same spot and they are like a blueish grey. Thanks for the feedback.

David,

I like you composition and the size of the kingfisher in the frame. I prefer the saturation of the repost but I still think the sat could come down more to look more natural.
