Alpine Storm

I recently finished a 4 day backpacking trip in the White Clouds Range of Idaho. I liked the composition here at sunset, but the color never came due to an approaching storm system. The scene was dark and moody and I feel the B/W conversion captures this well.

Nikon D80, Nikkor 12-24mm dx lens, polarizer.
2 exposure blend. 5 sec and 2 sec at f/16, ISO 200. B/W conversion in CS4.

All C&C are appreciated. I have not done many B/W conversions, so I'm eager to read your thoughts on this one.

Nicely done Black and white....the tones feel really natural to me and I like how you used the water as a nice lead in!

Indeed, the water is a nice lead-in. I also like the amount of blur you've achieved in it.

If it were me -- and I've not done a lot of black and white work, so take it for what it's worth -- I would push the blacks a little more at the back of the lake and at the top of the frame. The rich blacks and the contrast range in the foreground seem to draw attention away from the rest of the image.

Nice job.

I think the BW conversion is very good- it feels natural and film looking.
A great scene very well captured. Perhaps (imho) it has a bit too much air above.
Very nice capture.

I really like your conversion. Excellent mix of tones, and this has nice drama and mood.

Killer B&W Scott. I love the treatment and the lead in line of the little creek. White Clouds are a beautiful range. I backpacked into Castle and Merriam Peaks a few years back. Nice work.

Excellent tones Scott! The lead in of the creek makes the foreground and the sky texture keeps my eye from leaving the frame.
