Rearing loon

I was taking pictures of a duck family and was half paying attention to an adult and juvenile loon farther out on the lake. I noticed the adult dive, then lost track of it as I turned back to the ducks. Suddenly the loon reared in the water almost amidst the ducks. As the ducks sent their young in one direction and harried the loon in another, I managed to get this shot plus another one 6 seconds later that I will post shortly.

The shot was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi, 1/1250s, f/5.6, ISO 800, focal length 300. It has been sharpened and cropped, but not much else.

Jan, I might try to open up the darks a bit. As presented I'm not seeing much detail. Great action captured and you must have been surprised. Good reflexes.

Welcome Jan, action well caught here, I agree on trying to lighten the darks a bit here. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:
