May You All Be Inscribed and Sealed (in the Book of Life) for a Good Year.

Back in early August, I acquired a bouquet of Stargazer Lilium and shot and shot and shot

This is the final image of the series. I came out one morning to discover the few remaining petals and pollen scattered on the floor. In the vase all that was left was the stem and a few leaves.

This was shot with a small Leica P&S--the Leica D-Lux4 @ f/2.8, ISO 80, .6 s, manual exposure, spot metering. I don't remember if I used a tripod or hand-held the camera. (Too bad that info isn't embedded in the EXIF data )

I removed one vertical leaf from the left and cropped the right portion of the image to remove the part of the shot that picked up some extraneous background debris.

As I worked on the image, I wanted to achieve a sense of hope for the future as portrayed by the upper back-lit leaf. I also felt that the large leaf symbolically showed the scars of life.

I deliberately left the small stem on the right side in the image as a third diagonal pointing the eye to the large leaf.

Now that's an element that I would like your opinion on. Sometimes I look at the image and say, Yay!, other times, I think the image would be better without that small stem.

Thank you for looking and leaving your comments and suggestions.

Best wishes to all for the New Year,

Carol

It's kind of funny you raise the issue of that small stem, because my first thought (before reading your comment) was to suggest that you consider axing it. I find it a bit distracting personally, but it's a pretty minor thing. Otherwise I really like the image!

Unusual and intriguin image, Carol. Well done and well presented !
I like it as it is, with the small stem on the right. IMO it is better balanced.

Carol, I like what you have done with this image. I think it is the best of the series. I was like Phil when I first looked at the image re the small stem. But, upon studying it more, I think it should stay. I also see the green coming through on the main stem and then along the edge of the lower leaf. At least that's what my laptop lcd shows. If that is your intent and the small upper leaf is to represent hope then I might consider adding some fo the green to that leaf as well with the green flowing up the main stem to the upper leaf (slightly more green thaqn the lower one.) Just my paltry $.02 worth.

On a more important note. All the very best to you for the New Year. Keep shooting and keep smiling.

The real shallow depth of field hurts the image slightly on the outside edges, but it is a contemplative scene and a first impression that may change as I contemplate it more. I do like the dark background and the way the plant seems to float in space.

I admire this photo more for its composition  . I like the placement of the leaves originating point around the thirds and everything radiating from there. No one may give a second look at this kind of subject and I admire how you made it look photogenic.

Good experimentation, Carol.

Carol,

I like this a lot and would put it on my wall in a second. Very strong comp and great light I think. I'd probably clone out the partial but I'm ok with it as is too. I certainly think the composition has a more balanced and classic feel to it with the partial stem gone but even so, this is one of my favorites.

Very original composition, Carol and beautiful lighting. Like the idea behind it too. I like the extra bit of stem, I think because it takes the eye into the depths, while the main subject holds us to the frontal plane. Just my HO !!

Carol:
Like Phil and Bob, I looked at the image before reading your commentary and thought that the small stem should not be there. The rest of the image is very powerful and poetic; I like you vision, creativity and execution.

Interesting shot Carol. For my tastes I think this would benefit from the small stem being removed. There is a lot of negative space and a minimalist feel to this so removing that small stem would only strengthen those attributes. Nice work.

Artsy image Carol, really like this.
The ? of the small stem is a personal call, and in the final analysis a matter of taste or preference..
I'm leaning towards removal
Well done :toast: :toast:
