(c) Winter's Ghost

Since I've been very busy with landscape photography (and studying) it's been a while since I last posted here. And while landscaping is very satisfying I do feel myself missing the thrill of wildlife photography ever so often. I'm already looking to plan at least 2 wildlife trips besides my landscaping next year, so I'll get a nice mix. So if anyone has any suggestions for the last week of january or the summer I'd be glad to hear them

So I thought I'd post an image from the bavarian wildlife parks of this january (and since the christmas decoration is in the shops again I thouht it would not be a problem to post a snow image  ) This Lynx came very close to our lookout point in the wildlifepark, and we almost missed her because they are oh so stealthy, almost ghostlike. In the end I managed to get a few shots off, including this one.

This is the first (and only) image I ever used Content Aware Scaling to move the lynx a little closer to the right side of the image to get a better composition (yes: I cheated! :jump:) and I must say I'm very pleased with the result.

Thanks for looking!

Edit: After posting I noticed I did not remove the noise in the image before converting, so lets pretend you did not see any

Nice angle to show the back pattern.
Great pose and eyes.
the snow seems a little over-sharpened, from here.

I like the up-close shot of this in order to see the patterns in his coat. The clarity and pose are great too.

This one offered you a pleasing, dynamic pose. Exposure looks very good.

Beautiful image. The angle and the look on the cats face really add to the photo.

Jorne - I like the pose of the animal very much, the curve, the paw forward, but I'm puzzled why you would want to put the lynx against the right side of the frame. The first thing that entered my mind when I saw the picture was: "that's close to the edge of the frame". To read that you deliberately did this, confuses me. Instead, I would have prefered to see a bit more space there. I understand that you want the lynx to the right, with more space on the left, but if there is no information on the left, you could always use the content aware scaling to add some canvas on the left side.

Hope that makes sense.

Hey Jorne,

Good to see you posting here...doesn't surprise me that you're missing the thrill of wildlife photography (once bitten... ). I really like the image as posted - there's a nice dynamism that comes from the pose and the curve of the body (primarily driven by that out-stretched and curved paw). I like the amount of space on the left side of the frame, but tend to agree with Marsel that it's a tad tight on the right side.

By the way - I have to say that the amount of disclosure you give with your images (captive shot, your use of Content Aware Scaling, etc.) is great and a good example for others - thanks for doing it!!

About a good wildlife trip...you say: " So if anyone has any suggestions for the last week of january or the summer I'd be glad to hear them." Hey...drop me an email - I might have a suggestion or two!

Cheers...thanks for popping back in...

Thanks for the comments everyone! Looks like in my zeal to move the lynx to the right of the frame I overdid it

Brad: I'll drop you an email asap (which is somewhere this week :toast: )

I like the curve of the animal as he finds his way through the snow and the way the extended front leg leads the way.

I like it. Looks like the cat is following a path, looking left (I mean his right), stepping left...maybe a tad close on the right side of the frame, but still a nice capture.
