Distant rain

by Geoffrey Baker

Gallery: LandscapePosted September 26, 2010158 views10 comments
Taken on the heritage Coast in South Wales, UK one evening.

A rather simple composition, I set up my tripod low down in the sea to capture the water swirling around this large rock.
I had my wellies on of course

There was some rain falling out to sea which looked nice against the glow of the setting sun.

Sony A100
Sigma 10-20 EX
1/2 second
f16
ISO 100
10mm
2 stop Cokin X-Pro ND grad
Tripod
Cable release
I chose a panoramic type crop for this one.

Effective comp and light and good job with the NDF. "Wellies." Wonder if that's the first instance of that word on this forum?

Very interesting perspective. It works for me.

The two large bowed lines give the comp some strenght. Of course so does the drama of that rain cloud in the background. I think you could neutralize the whites a little more though it is fine just the way it is.

I love the contrast between the sharp rock and the blurred water. The storm is good too! :toast:

Very nice lighting and water movement, this is a type of photos I like : a simple composition but has some interesting features.

Lovely shot Geoffrey. Pano works well and love that cloud and the shutter speed. (some people here call them wellies, some gumboots!)

I had another play with this one in Photoshop to try to clean up the whites as suggested, I'm no Photoshop expert though and this is the best I could get, it looks a bit better to me.

If I try to take any more Cyan out of the waves I end up introducing Red which is the opposite of Cyan, anyway, there would have been a slight Cyan cast from the sky so probably best to leave it like this.

Geoffrey,

I really like the pano composition and the golden light and color makes for a very pleasing image. The little swirl in the foreground surf makes for a great focal point.

Wonderful composition and flow to this image. I like the storm combined with the sunset, and the rock. The larger image looks great, well seen and well done.
