Red-tailed with repost

Sugar Land TX. Today. I was walking toward this hawk on a telephone pole (the hawk, not me). When he flew off he kind of came at me-well maybe that was a bit of an overstatement, but he became very vocal as he flew away. Clearly didn't like me there.

D3 ISO 800. 300/2.8 with 2x tc. f 5.6 1/6400.

Could have had a lower ISO--but I didn't. :frown:

That's an intense pose Angela, very cool and well caught. A little bit of shadow/highlight adjustment might help to bring out some more detail in the shadowed areas but be conservative with that tool as it can bring in a lot of noise. :toast:

He's definitely giving you the evil eye Angela. Nice sharp shot and the eye contact with you puts it over the top for me. Nice job.

Nice "look" you got here Angela. I like the composition and the position of the bird in flight.

Oops, I forgot to mention I added a little canvas to the top.

Nate-the shadows are already brought up a little. When I tried more, I got that noise you were mentioning. Decided just to let some of the shadow remain.

Great pose!!
The detail and eye are really nice. If you could lighten up the dark half of th face, this will be even better.

I like the outstretched pose Angela. You could probably lighten the entire photo a little bit to address the shadowed face, etc. Fantastic eye contact! :toast:

Love that catchlight & the image connects with the viewer immediately. Great direct eye contact.
I especially like the POV and this dynamic flight pose Angela :toast:

The eye contact and the talons make this image for me Angela. Love the overall position of the bird too. There is a pretty strong halo around the bird that I would work on eliminating if this were mine. Overall, a great shot.

Neat take off shot Angela, I like the eye contact and the trailing talons. I think you could lighten the darks in the image selectively by raising the midtones in a levels layer, that way you don't push the brighter lights over the top. Agree with Ron B about the halo, it seems to happen with clear blue skies. With a little more work this could have more impact than it already has.

Love the look he is giving the camera and those outstretching talons. Definitely an image that keeps ones attention.

Wonderful pose here, Angela. Shadows and halo already mentioned. There is so much software out there these days to deal with shadows (and noise reduction). This shot is so potentially spectacular that I think it would be worth considering more experimentation.

Here is the repost-looks better to me, but I'm a novice. Re-comment if you wish. I reworked it from the ground up.

Angela, the repost looks much better to me. I do not notice the halo and the color of the sky is much more natural. The hawk is brighter overall, but from the small image available, looks well exposed. Well done.

The repost offers much greater detail in the feathering, particularly apparent under the left wing and the top of the tail. Worth the effort to rework the image IMO Angela.
