After driving through the rain at 5:30am, hiking through snow flurries at 6:00am, the wind was whipping up the waves and blowing clouds all over. I snapped this shot on the way out and made a note to come back when the weather was better.
Xsi,10-24 @ 22mm,1/20sec @ f11, ISO400(windy conditions).

What would you do to improve this?

Thanks,Dean.

The comp and colors look good Dean. I would just lighten it up a bit and try to retain some texture in the clouds. Beautiful place.

I have a different take on this. The technical details all look great, and the subject is great. IMHO, this was great weather, and the weather should have been the subject. Instead, the subject for me is that tuft of grass in the dead middle--it pulls my attention there right away and im unable to move my eyes elsewhere, cause there arent any lines leading me--its just an island that i get trapped on. Looking to the side of the photo, it looks like there's a stream that leads up-valley. I think i would have tried to use this to my advantage--take the stream as a leading line and have it lead straight to all that super weather on the distant peak--IMO, the peak should have been at least 1/3 of the real estate in this frame; as it's presented, it is just a distant object tucked away in back and it's begging me to ignore it. I dont want to ignore it

It feels like rain and I like it. The darkness wins over here Dean. Neat shot

Just needs a little punch to make it have a little more impact. Using layers to keep the sky in reign. The comp works very well.

Dean,

I think trying to answer the question on how to improve this greatly depends on what you want or how you felt about capturing this scene at the time. If it's the drama of the weather, the rain, the dark, gloomy mood, then I think perhaps a dramatic b&w rendition might work pretty well. there's a nice range of tones and with the right combo of r, g, b sliders, you could make this quite moody and work well. For straight color and a pleasant autumn landscape, I would definitely brighten this up a tad as others have already mentioned. It's hard to convey the dark mood and conditions with very little sky and so this comes across more as just being dark.

Anyway, I see two different roads you could go down - either one I think you could improve this one - and I think this has very good potential.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. This version is lightened a bit. I'll head back to see if I can incorporate a leading line and more of the BG mountains. It's an easy 45min hike to the lake and there seems to be a lot to explore. :toast:

Dean,

This is very much improved by lightening. The landscape seems more vibrant, yet you didn't really lose any of that stormy mood and atmosphere. thanks for posting the re-worked image.
