This Spotted Sandpiper kept me company for a while on the John Day River here in Oregon a I floated along in my pontoon boat. He was almost constantly darting in and out of the rocks and grasses, so it was nice when this moment came along that at least one of us was still. Canon 7D, 300mmL, 1.4 extender. 1/1000, f5.6, ISO 160. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome and nice first post. I love how birds are often more tolerant when you're in a boat, allowing for shots like this. I know you can't always compose things the way you want (expecially from a boat), but it would have been nice without the plants in the foreground. I kind of like the natural 'looking through the grass' feel, but there is enough of them to become a distraction.

As a side note, when you post you can include a larger image of 1200 pixels on the long side. That really helps others to give constructive critiques. Nice post and I look forward to more of your shots.

Nice first post, Jeff. I like how you managed to frame the sandpiper with the vegetation. The bird looks interested in us too. Often I like to comment on sharpness, level of detail and presence of a catchlight in the eye of the bird. However, I'm sorry but on my monitor this image is too small for me to do that with any certainty.

Welcome Jeff, nice first post. It's a bit small to critique at this size, try posting at the 720 pixel limit for regular posts. :wavey:
