Savannah sparrow

Here's another recent shot. I was out trying to get some teal flight shots, which is hard to do when the all just sit on the water and eat and sleep. This sparrow was nice enough to perch a bit off to my left giving me a decent shot without having to move and scare off all the other birds that were in the water near me. This is very early morning light from a rosy sunrise.

Canon 7D
500mm f/4
ISO 640
1/1000s
f/6.3
Manual exposure

a bit of NR on the BG

What is this, I have been away for a while and I come back and your posting small perching birds, I thought I was on the wrong forum, just kidding. Beautiful light Ron. I really like that pose and the way that you have composed this.

I was thinking much like Matt when I saw the thumb. I was suprised that it was cropped so much. top notch as always.

Different and very nice Ron. The perch is exceptionally pleasing and the lighting is super too. Great colors throughout. I'm sometimes unsure what to say when a bird is partially concealed by the perch, since the head and other field marks are clearly visible it still works very well here I feel. :toast:

Yes, this is more crop than I like, but this shot was taken while I was hiding, so I did not want to move to get closer as I would have scared all the ducks I was hoping to get shots of. The crop does diminish the detail in the bird quite a bit, but I really like the overall look of the image. Thanks for all the comments. Cheers.

Love the light and well captured! It would have been nice if the bird landed on this side of the perch.

KC, thanks so much for the comment. I agree. But I also I think both ways would have worked. The way it is, you get to see the underside of the bird including all the great chest markings. Moreover, I think the perch is interesting enough in the area it bisects the body not to detract from the image. If the bird would have been on the near side, then we would have a better look at the back of the bird. Neither is bad IMO.

I'm late to this one Ron but I love it - especially the light and colors. Having the perch in front of the bird doesn't bother me one iota. Composition couldn't be better for my tastes. Excellent!
