One of the easiest places to shoot images of elk up close is at Mammoth in Yellowstone. One of the most difficult things about shooting there is finding an angle without human made objects in the background. Note the fence rail in this one. Still, I like the shot, even if I don't have the elks' full bodies in the frame.

Great action shot Roger! I find the eye open/eye closed a great point of interest. I agree that the fence is a shame, and I can't help but think the shot would be improved with a bit more room all round - with the antler tips included as well as the clipped feet of the bull on the left. It looks slightly soft and low in contrast as well - I think a small boost in these areas would help the image.

Thanks for sharing,

Billy

I like the close up of the action, and also find the eyes interesting, one open and one closed. The fence doesn't bother me very much. I think Billy has good points on the composition and contrast. Nice capture. :toast:

Billy analyzed this very well! Thanks Billy. These kinds of captures are always cool because they show iconic and dramatic behavior.

Wonderful action Roger. I bet a vertical with only the heads and antlers would be pretty cool as well. The fence is a bummer though.
