Cause and Effect

On the several occasions now that I've hiked the Left Fork to the Subway over the years, I've noticed that most photographers focus (pardon the pun) their attention on the familiar "joint" in the creek bed just before the Subway, and for the most part more or less ignore this beautiful little cascade and pool (i.e. - the larger one, not the smaller one in the foreground) just upstream which actually feeds water into the joint. I'm not a geologist or a hydrologist, but it has always seemed to me that if it wasn't for this strategically located pool, the joint might have little or no water flowing through it at all. Personally, I find this feature to be as photographable and picturesque as the joint, if not more so. This most recent composition, captured just last week, is quickly growing on me, and may become my favorite thus far of this feature.

This is really a nice image of this place. Good comp and perfect timing for the fall color/leaves. Color looks good and I like the scattered leaves all about.

Great work Jim. I noticed a couple of these as well, but didn't take the time to put them together in a composition. I really like the way the water looks and your processing looks wonderful too. Very well composed....excellent work! :wavey:

I like how the water flows across the photo. The leaves scattered on the wet rock area really nice element. There is so much to look at. Beautiful.

Jim, This is really nice. Easy to see why it is growing on you. I like this well thought out comp. It really seems to work for me. Wonderful colors and that small cascade looks great with the shutter speed you used. The tree branch coming out from the bank adds alot to the upper part of the image. Very nicely done. I enjoy this scene.

Very nice Jim. This is really colorful and bright, but not overdone at all. Very nicely composed and it really attracts my eye.

What's not to like from colors, composition, elements, exposure, and shutterspeed. The reddish colors on the diagonal foreground ledges are grabbing. This image and your other ESS post are great!

This is fantastic, Jim. Never been to the Subway but I've seen photos of the crack and this blows them out of the water. Exceptional image in every way.

I'm liking this as much as any other comp from there I have seen. I definately would not walk by that and not stop! Works very nicely for me.

I love everything about this image... particularly the diagonal tension between that fg pool and the falls in the bg. I can't think of anything I would change here. Well done!

I've shot this waterfall many times and had to wait for other photogs to finish plenty of times so I consider this is the familiar and very photogenic like just about every little odd and unique feature in the subway. I think most photographers are shooting many different shots but you don't see many in the forum here because they want to focus on the iconic views or similar.

I like the shot, it's subtle and the highlights in the top are nice. I'd like to see a little less negative space with the bottom cropped a little to emphasize points of interest a little more. That might make things bolder but like I said I'm just one subjective opinion.
