The Peach Orchard

I spent some time in Napa this past weekend, shooting fall colors and chasing stormy weather. My friend and I stumbled across this peach orchard that had some of the most spectacular colors I have ever seen. It was literally a photographer's paradise. Brilliantly colored trees decorated the landscape, and beneath them were leaves of varying colors and size. We ended up shooting macro leaf shots for about 6 hours over a period of two days.

I wanted to get a shot that portrayed what it was like to sit under one of these trees. I extended the legs of my tripod, making my camera about 6 inches off the ground, getting a shot of leaves only 12 inches away from the camera, and then leaves in the distance about 10 ft away. This is a composite image of around 25 shots. The final file was just about 1.5 gigs, and is about 22,000 pixels tall. It should make for an awesome print. I spent about 15 mins zoomed in at 100% looking for bugs, the details are amazing.

25 shots... holy cow! I think this would fascinating to study in large print. Love all the subtle color variation and interwoven shapes captured here. Really nice work IMO.

A 25 image composite should certainly provide detail and then some. This looks nice and I'm impressed with the work and time you put into it because you got some good results. I bet it will look nice in a large print.

Incredible, Benjamin. The color, textures, detail are all stunning. A 25 shot composite sounds incredibly complicated to pull off but your results are astounding.

I know exactly where this is! I saw it yesterday afternoon in fact. Didn't stop though, had another destination on my list. I did work this orchard last year though. It is spectacular. Looks like your effort paid off with this one!

“the details are amazing.”

This is an understatement. My aging eyes would not see this detail if I were there in person.

I really like the light and the comp.

I think I drove past this spot over the weekend, too.

I like this alot! The vertical pano suits it well. I don't think I'd have the patience to work on 25 exposures to make one image, but it looks like it'd be worth it.

Ben,

Gotta agree with Stan! Kudos to you for being creative. And I think you were quite successful in capturing that feeling of the carpet of leaves beneath the tree. Congrats on the crafting and technical aspects of this as well. Fabulous work Ben.

Love the originality Ben! Interesting info on the shot too, 25 is a lot. Hopefully your computer doesn't chug too slowly to handle that file size.Well seen and photographed.
