Vermillion Flycatcher
by Carlos Escamilla
I photographed this cooperative vermillion flycatcher on Sunday morning when things were quiet at Lake Casablanca State Park in Laredo Tx. We are seeing more migrants especially at our lakes & parks. As I walked the periphery of some picnic grounds, I spotted this vermillion flying off and back on a swing set at a distance. I must have caught its curiosity as it flew and landed on a salt cedar just yards away from me as I positioned for a possible perch with a nice composition. What you see is the results.
Thank you for viewing and commenting on my images.

7 commentsThe large image is fairly soft, though, and you have lost a lot of detail in the reds , so I'm guessing it is a large crop.
Still, the pose is good, there is a bright eye, great perch and BG.
Looking forward to more of your images!

As a relaitve newcomer to NPN, I am seeing how even superb images, to my eye, can be improved. Still, I'll take a chance on a few of my own sometime soon, and I'm sure I will learn from doing it.

I like the pose, the composition and the light in the vermillion's eye. Though I can see detail in some of the reds there are places I see very little detail because the reds are out of gamut, to fix that I would reduce the red saturation some. As Sandy mentioned the bird is a bit soft and after looking at the larger version I'm not sure that can be fixed with more sharpening. There is also a a fine, light hao around some parts of the bird, that can be avoided by carefully masking the subject before applying any sharpening and only sharpening the subject.
