Pink Gerbera-Camera view

by Bob Duff

Gallery: FloraPosted November 13, 2010114 views12 comments
I have a pink gerbera with pretty much the same POV that Pat has for his scanned image. I thought I would post this one to give viewers a comparison between the what the scanner sees and what the camera does. I thought this was timely since both images will be readily seen together. Hope you don't mind Pat.

Shot with Canon 5D Mk II 90mm T/S f16. LR3.

The image was shot in natural light with a black cloth BG. I also applied a vignette mask and had it come over the outside edges of the petals to give a sense of the light falling off the bloom.

Absolutely gorgeous Bob! This is my favorite flower in it's most beautiful color. I can't think of one thing to improve this photo, but I would love to know more about how you made this image (i.e. flash or not, how did you achieve the black background, did you cut off the stem and set the flower on a flat surface, etc.).

Avesome image, Bob.
May be I've some preconceived ideas, but I do prefer a camera image to a scanned one...
Even if the Pat's image is really exceptional, tender and colorful, I like the vivid and clean luminosity of your one.
Pat, of course is a matter of personal taste...!
Cheers.

Gorgeous image and flower Bob. I particularly like the ring of shorter petals and the black center. I do like this very much but it's not the Feinstein look that I'm still trying to accomplish. You're flower is too sharp and rich looking. (smile)

The differences are subtle, but quite noticeable. Thanks for posting this image to contrast with his... beautifully done.

Well, this is wonderful to see this vs Pat's. I love them both but for different reasons. I enjoy the richness and detail this shows. And I like the vignetting. Fun to view same flower, 2 different images and processing. Thanks, Bob.

Wonderful color, texture and light Bob. It is very interesting to see your work and compare it to what Pat's doing with the scanner. Well done!

Bob:
The difference between the two is the light which even in the scan but more directional in the camera (brighter along the upper portion). The camera version also seem to have more tonal range. Your vignetting imitates to some extend the fading light of the scan image - perhaps it could be improved by a graduated vignetting. Also the camera version has more depth and 3D look. Overall its a terrific image. After playing with the scanner for sometime now, I still prefer camera image probably out of old habits. But scanning can be fun too especially for very detailed work.
