Farewell to the Hebrides

Isle of Harris, Scotland

A commanding view from the southern tip of this isle at sunset. The landscape littered with boulders is typical of this part of the island and is one of the reasons I chose a high perspective rather than my usual coastal locations.

Canon 5DMkII, 16-35mm 2.8L, ISO 100, f16, 1 second, warming polarizer, GND filter, Gitzo Mountaineer tripod.

This photo accompanies my latest blog ’Photographic yield and a report from Scotland’.

Lovely light on the foreground slopes. The blues in the rest of the image go so nice with that. I do notice tha darkening effect of the grad, but I actually like the dynamice of it. Very nice image!

That glowing warm light on the foreground is superb, and a wonderful perspective. The composition is just right, and the addition of the moon puts this over the top in my opinion. Outstanding image.

Perfect conditions for such a shot: interesting light on the fg and that cloud bank in the distance. And some beautiful scenery as the proper stage for this display. Good stuff!

The warm light and great comp make for a beautiful image. The upper left corner seems a bit dark for the rest of the frame, but that is minor.

What a wonderful view! Beautiful light and color together. The grass and rocks are so nice with that light and I love the sky. Great comp.

Lovely shot Kah Kit, I've admired your work for some time now. I really like the soft warm light in the foreground and the overall feel of this magnificent scene. I wonder if bringing a little light to the middle-ground ridge that is darkened by the grad line and accentuating the golden highlights along the top would add another dynamic to this already wonderful shot.

I love the clarity here, and enjoy exploring the FG. Looks like lots of possibilities for more intimate subjects as well.

Kah Kit,

What a fabulous view. I love the late light and the colors are beautiful. I also think your comp is excellent with just the right amount of sky and letting the viewer know that you wanted to show them the landscape and not just a great sky.

Just an observation, but I'm wondering with the late light, the angle of view, etc., was a GND even needed here? Of course I wasn't there and I don't know the strength of the one you used, so using one certainly could have been the right choice.

Lon, a grad was very much necessary here. The sun was setting a little right off the frame. I used a 3 stop reverse GND to tame the brightness on the horizon. Randy, I can guarantee that there is no grad line visible, the dark ridge line is a shadow. I shot a picture without the grad and it's just as dark.

Terrific light and colour Kah, the light reflecting off the sea looks great. Also the reds in the grasses is beautiful.
