Steens Aspens
by Phil Knouf
My friend Ron and I camped at The Steens in late September early October. The Aspen were at their peak. I believe this area has one of the largest stands of Aspen in Oregon. We were camped at Jackman Park at 7,700 feet. This image is early in the sunrise on October 1st. Very peaceful with wonderful directional light.
I recently sold my Arca-Swiss 4x5 and lenses and purchased my first digital camera, a Canon EOS 5D MKII. For this image I used the 24 - 105 L lense at 70 mm, f/8 and 1/15 sec. processed in LR3. It prints just beautifully. The web image comes out a bit too saturated in the reds just to let you know.

6 commentsThanks for your interest in my image. This was my first visit but not the last! I would love to get there during the spring and also photograph the nearby wildlife refuge.
My next post will be of Kiger Gorge. It's at least 2,000 feet deep while Fish Creek where this image was taken is probably only a few hundred feet. Fish Creek is quite a bit more accessable than Kiger.
I hope to backpack up some of the deeper gorges such as Little Blitzen and Kiger for a different perspective on the Aspens and The Steens.

make an attempt to go. Great colors and well composed. I like the diagonal
line also where the meadow meets the first stand of Aspens.
Thanks for your comments! Yes, the Steens are certainly a wonderful place to make images. I am planning on going back this fall. By the way very nice images!
