Cottonwood leaf and iridescent plant oils on water, in a deep and wild canyon in Escalante. For an explanation of this awesome phenomenon, please check out my blog: oil paintings.

Please check out the LARGE version too. Thanks for your thoughts!

Canon 5D2, 24-105mm, 4 exposures bracketed for focus.

Fascinating, Floris. This was my favorite of your oil experiments for sure.

Wow, this is amazing. The composition is very strong of course, but the phenomenon as such adds a lot to the appeal here. Would have been great without that big leaf, but the leaf adds the obvious focal point. Creative stuff a usual Floris!

Floris not much to say here but awesome. Hats off to you this one just sings. I like this one better than the other abstract on your blog. The leaf is crucial i believe in grounding this into reality. Just awesome. It could have been so easy to over saturate this photo but like always it is elegantly done. Cheers

Wow Floris. I like this one even better than the last one... and I LOVED that one. Really clever composition. I was glad to hear that you spend so much time on these. My eye just doesn't see this way yet, so I had envisioned you just plunking down your camera and being done in 15 seconds, then moving on. Gives me hope!

Killer! The cracks, blues, contrasting flecks, and leaf make this more dramatic (less static) than your previous post. I like them both, but blue being my favorite color...... :jump:

This was my favorite on your blog, as I mentioned in response to another recent post of yours, and I thought I'd comment to affirm that again. The color contrast and "wow" factor of this image make it a real standout in my book.

This is Sweeeeeeet!! I think it may be your best abstract, period. It almost has me clicking on that link for a print, and im usually about as likely to buy prints from other photographers as i am likely to let Paris Hilton borrow my toothbrush. The deuling moderator thing is pretty cool too, now all we need is Lon and Abdullaziz to get on a similar posting schedule...

I like this very much for the following reasons: great colors (blue & gold), lines,
textures, main subject off-centered, big leaf diagonally composed. Very per-
ceptive of you to find this and excellently rendered, Floris.

Brilliant find and image Floris. Just curious but why the four images for focus? Isn't this scene just lying on a flat plain, looking straight down? :toast:

Thanks everyone! This was probably my favorite from the trip, so I'm glad you like it!

Adam - flat, yes, but not looking straight down. You have to look at the oils at an angle to see the iridescent colors... thus the focus blending.

Wonderfully unique, creative, and abstract - yet still grounded in reality with the leaf that is easily identifiable. Great image.

Floris,

This is fantastic! Yet another image this week where the term kaleidoscope comes immediately to mind. I really happen to like the blue-ish/purple tone to this. The subject matter is quite fascinating. I'm sure you spent a lot of time on this one too!

I'm not sure if you used one, or if it would have made any difference, but what about a polarizer here? I think perhaps a very slight increase in contrast might work, especially in the lower half. But that's minor as this is a great find and an outstanding image.

Thanks Lon - I did play around with a polarizer, but it didn't really make any difference. I'll look into the contrast, thanks!

Envious how much diversity you guys can find out there. Crazy how much oils are present but sure make for some great photography. I thought cottonwoods (at least by me) have more serration along the leaf edges?

Great art Floris. Nicely done

This one is probably my favorite from your oils on water series. The leaf under the water really makes this one interesting and adds a sense of scale to the image. You have a great eye for these small intimate scenes.

Neat. Even though this is likely quite two-dimensional in reality, it sure has a lot of nice texture to it.

I definitely get caught up in the dueling/overlapping/merging literal and fantastical levels of this photograph. It's a little hard to admit that I tend to prefer your earlier plant oil post since this one seems to have such an advanced 'cerebral' quality.
