Another one from my recent southwest US expedition.

This is from White Pocket. Way in a back corner of the area, I found this spot where these little round pebbles had been driven by the wind into the creases in the brain rock. I spent hours here; it was such a peaceful area.

5DM2, 16mm, f/16, two exposures hand blended, 1/2 sec for ground, 1/4 sec for sky, and a crapload of cloning to remove two jet contrails

This is really other-worldly, Kory, and one of the best shots I've seen in a while.

Love the sky on fire... but what I find most intriguing are those pebbles everywhere... very cool shot!

Pretty wild dude! I like the primary round sandstone form front and center. If you like pebbles like that... I (thanks to Guy) know of a place that would blow your mind...

Nice composition and of course the colors are spectacular. Good job on the cloning, never would have guessed it. Don't you just love contrails?

First off, if you came up with the term "brain rock" I think that's the most awesome thing I've heard in a while!
Second, great image! Good job on the contrails; they are excellently absent Those pebbles are so interesting!

This is excellent, Kory. I see a trend among other photographers following the "sweet light and ultrawide lenses can make anything look good so no need to worry about composition" trend. But this image has a very cohesive and well thought out composition. There is something interesting at every point as the eye moves progressively towards the formations. Fantastic work here.

This is awesome Kory. The small pebbles really make this one interesting. The composition is outstanding and I love the colors. I'm glad you were able to clone out the contrails.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Floris, splill the beans, man! :)

Jason: oh, yeah, I love contrails about as much as rubbing salt in my eyes. It was funny because for hours while I waited for the sun to drop, there was nary a contrail to be seen. But, then of course just as the sky peaked in color, TWO jets cris-crossed right through my comp! Doh.

Anne: nope, it wasn't I who coined that term. But, yeah, whomever it was is a genius.

Guy: thanks so much, man. I was thinking of your work the whole time I was there. The place has your style written all over it.

This is a very striking image, Kory. So many interesting elements - the lines, pebbles, sky. A lot to enjoy here.

Of course the landscape, light, color are all fantastic! But it's the little pebbles collected in the creases that are my favorite part of the image. I'd like to see that in a large print.

Mark, I got there riding in Marc's 4 X 4. He knew the way. I drove my two-wheel drive vehicle down the first 30-ish miles of dirt road, which was rough, but passable. But, for the last section, I had to abandon my vehicle. It's quite a nasty road the last 16 miles or so.

Didn't see the pebbles until you mentioned them. Very col how nature works. I think the opposing angles of the slope and cloud created a nice tension in the image. Really nice shot.
