Timeless Surf

Poipu, Kaua'i. Some folks complain that images where the surf is turned to mist by a long shutter are too cliche'- to each his own I guess, but I suppose sometimes I'm more interested in trying to create art than representing reality, and have always been drawn to the ability of the camera to capture time beyond what we can see with the naked eye. (besides, this Montana boy doesn't get to photograph the ocean nearly enough! ) The blues may be a bit too much for some in this one, but I tend to go in that direction sometimes, and I like how it contrasts with the warm highlights. Opinions one way or the other, as it relates to this image, are welcome (except for Stan... - ha! just kidding of course, buddy!  )

Canon 5DII. 24-105 @ 28 mm. ISO 400. f/16. 10 sec. CP. Single exposure. See LARGER VERSION for best detail. Thanks!

Very nice Doug, the rocks/stones on the LHS fading into the mist... very cool.

I like the effect of the water here and the warm highlights on the rocks. Very well done!

Doug I am really enjoying this one. The photo is well arranged and the effect complements it. The high lights on the rocks look great and pull together nicely with the water high lights. Cheers

This is not to cliche for me. The mist created with the long SS has created a wonderful ethereal mood, Doug. A beautiful image for sure.

Nice shot Doug. I like it. The blues definitely work for me here because they are balanced nicely with the warm highlights on the rocks and water.

I really like this... doesn't remotely resemble water anymore... in fact the rocks in the bg look like mountains looking out of an ocean of thick clouds... super shot

I'm a big fan of these misty surf shots and artistic license. I think you've captured a lovely mood and more than a singular moment in time very well!

The little bits of orange scattered through the scene really pop, very nice! I love the patch of oranges at the top too, almost looks like sky, which makes for a neat optical illusion.

This is fantastic, Doug. You have taken the 'surf turned to mist' to a whole new level in my opinion. The highlights on the rocks, the extraordinary detail and texture in the rocks that you achieved, plus an amazing composition, make this one stunning image. Incredible work. The square format works very well too.

Foggy, blurred water can be cliche, but I think here it is not because it is the main subject in this photograph and not just a gimmick to "enhance" a scene. The colors and the balance in the compostion also work really well. Good work Montana boy!

Doug,

This is beautiful and I agree with you completely about creating art and not being concerned with what someone else may think as cliche. I love the interaction of the surf and rock and as Marc commented, the sea and sky? above are creating a surreal element to the scene; adding mystery, intrigue and even more beauty.
