Fractured

Ice cracking on Chapel Pond in the Adirondacks. This was taken on a brutally cold day this past week. Standing there you could hear the ice cracking all around, echoed back by the icicle-ladden cliffs surrounding the lake. Comments and critiques welcome. Please view large.

Cool shot, I guess in more ways than one. The second I saw this I said Chapel Pond or Cascade Lake.

This is gorgeous. I really like the leading line of snow-on-ice. I'm on my laptop, but the muted colors look very nice with the nearly monochrome ice and rock.

Very ice, I mean, nice! The detail in the icicles is beautiful. Wonderful winter scene!

I find the composition and graphic nature of this one really appealing, Zack - nice work!

Lots of interesting elements in here, Zack. I like the sweeping line taking us into the scene, and the collection of icy rocks and trees on the distant wall.

A pretty striking and original presentation. The small version does lose quite a lot of the wonderful details in the ice and background. Very nice work.

Zack,

Have to agree with Kah Kit that the smaller version has lost a lot of detail in the curved line of ice/snow, but it's most certainly there in the large version. what a great lead-in line to even more intriguing ice and snow elements in the background. The frozen surface of the lake looks so inviting if I were an ice skater, but from your description, probably not all that safe to be out on at this early part of winter.

I might consider a slight crop or a burn down of the very top set of ice/icicles in the ULC. A little bright and it pulls my eye a bit. but not a deal breaker by any stretch.

Looks like a place to return to as the season progresses.

Talk about great use for a leading line. Excellent image.

You really conveyed the feeling of "brutally cold" with this image. I love all the repeating verticals and the sweeping curve in the foreground. I kind of wish either the foreground ice was a little cooler, or the background icicles had a bit less blue (just to strengthen the connection between FG and BG), but that's minor. Well shot :toast:

Awesome shot Zack, love that sweeping line in the foreground. I used to spend a lot of time climbing those crazy drips and curtains. Surprised you can't see any climbers in this shot.

Beautiful winter scene. I like the stark and linear tree trunks against the sweeping leading line.

Zack, this is wonderful! That leading line into what I consider an abstract background is what makes this image stand out! :toast:

Nicely done - this very effectively conveys a sense of cold desolation - you've captured the mood perfectly!

Nice comp! The scale of the hanging ice on the background wall is awesome. So much stuff to look at back there, you really have to see it bigger.
