Fallen Gnome

This canyon in northern Arizona has some colorful mudstone that erodes to create what remind me of red capped gnomes that eventually topple. Image was taken at dusk as a few high clouds and lingering contrails tried to turn pink.

The comp. and colors are nice, but I am left felling like there should be a little more pop to the image. Maybe bring up the saturation just a bit.

These "cardinals" as some have called them are very interesting due to the erosion that has taken place over the eons. I think you've captured that erosive quality even better by including that one large, fallen capstone in the foreground. I also like the soft light and colors bathing the sandstone.

It is a fascinating place and I commend you for finding an original composition. The soft light is beautiful and it does tell a story.

Fantastic Image, I really like that you included the tumbled formation as well.

I think the light in this is really complimentary to the subject matter. The soft streaks of color in the sky resemble the rocks, and it all works very well together.

I like this and as Guy alluded to, it puts those caps in a larger context and helps anchor the image. I like the subtle light and pastel tones, only nit might be to sharpen just a tad more.

Looks pretty good to me! Reminds me of Rick Goldwasser's image.
My only nit would be that I wish you had taken a couple of steps to the right to reveal more of those last two hoodoos.

Thank you for the comments.
I noticed the softness in the 720p after posting. Also played a lot with shadows/highlight/sharpening to prevent any major halo around the points while putting some brightness back into the image.

John, I did happen to meet Rick G and Shane McD while there Sunday morning. From another image I took, I also realized my two step misalignment failing to get the right gnomes. Guess that means another trip.

Hey Doug

Really nice capture here. It really captures some of the magic this place has to offer. I like how the pink in the sky compliments the similar tones within the sandstone. It was great to run into you here, and finally meet you.

I like the soft lighting and how the line of the fallen stone mimics the line of the hillside behind. :toast:

Very unique comp at a beautiful place. It's a gorgeous image for sure. Personally I would like to see a little more pop between the blues and pinks in the sky, but it definitely works as is. :toast:
