Looks like a fantastic canyon, Jim! I love the reflected light on the walls, the fall colors, and the falls. Since all three of those things are in the top 1/3rd of the image, I also much prefer a crop of just the top 1/3rd of the image -- the bottom half just doesn't hold my interest much.

Floris,

Thanks for your comment. I have some horizontal comps from this location that exclude the more prominent foreground of this composition and include more to the left and right, which work very well. Cropping the image above as you describe doesn't work for me personally, without the long curve leading to the base of the waterfall and without the detail under the surface in the foreground.

Fantastic composition, Jim. I love the curve leading up the frame and of course the colors are wonderful.

I agree with the crop suggestion. Very nice top 1/3 but the foreground is dull by comparison.

Jim - The light on the far canyon wall looks incredible- so much that it leaves the bottom left a littl bland. If there were more colors in the rock or more interesting FG elements, I think it might be stronger. The line of the FG rock does bring me up to the falls which definately helps the image. Did you get some shots just below the falls looking up toward the wall. Looks like an intense canyon - you were there during some magnificent light.

Beautiful shot here, Jim. There is a lot of nice color and the waterfall looks very interesting. I actually would like to see the falls, canyon walls, and the fall color featured more prominently.

The foreground is Ok here but not really compelling enough to be featured so prominently. I think this would be stronger at the 35mm end of the zoom...perhaps with a landscape composition.

I hope you see this as constructive. I still think you have a fine image here but there is room for improvement.

EDIT: I posted my comment before reading the others. It sounds like the other compositions that you mentioned would be much stronger. By the way, you get extra bonus points for shooting a unique location (presumably in Zion).
