Time Forgotten

This photo was taken at a difficult to reach beach near Cape Blanco on the Oregon coast. It required a sketchy climb down some cliffs with only a narrow exposed ramp allowing access. This is one of those locations that without a pretty low tide the entire area is submerged. The rock formations and rugged coast line were really striking, so it was fun to just be there.

Arriving within a half hour of sunset we (Chip P, Zack S, and David C) only had a short time to explore and look for compositions. We rushed to set up whatever images we could as the sunset came. Then we had to climb up the cliffs in the fading light and make the two mile hike through the dense forest in the dark to get back to the car...a pretty standard photo outing for many of the folks who frequent this forum actually.

The light during the moment I made this image was particularly compelling but I didn't have much time to make the most of it. I attempted to use the small pool, wet sea weed and rocks to reflect as much of the light into the scene as possible. I'm not sure that the composition is strong enough to adequately anchor the extreme light and color. I'm also not sure if the hazy, low saturation atmosphere toward the horizon adds or detracts. With some more time at this location to experiment with perspectives I think some really amazing images are possible.

Canon 5D MKII, 16-35mm f/2.8 L lens, no filters, two exposures blended for tonal balance between sky and landscape.

You certainly made the best of your short time there. This is a really nice capture and blend. Y'all must have some pretty dramatic tides out there; here in NW Florida it hardly makes a difference between high and low tide.

Definitely has that rugged coastal look to the image Sean. The evening clouds are a nice bonus.

Just wanted to let you know that I ordered the pack, should get it today. Thanks for your help Sean, much appreciated.

Quite a lot to take in here. I like the wide angle and the wonderful combination of greens and reds in this shot. Although the middle of the photo is slightly on the bright side, I don't think it or the interesting haze (I'm actually enjoying looking closer for the sea stacks in the distance) detracts from the image at all. Nicely done Sean.

Hi Sean

Why the heck does this only have five comments. There is tons of interesting dynamics going on here. Great capture Sean!

Neat comp and light. The contrast between the cloud and the moss is particularly striking. Blend-wise it feels a bit too NDF-ish. At least on my laptop sky is a bit dark and bottom of the sky a bit light. Also, the reflection in the water is way lighter than the object in the sky, a common thing seen with filters. I love to comp and the drama of it, and don't want to sound overly nitpicky, so just consider these some observations. You're best at knowing where your own images need to go.

For me, you composition is strong enough to achieve your goal and the low saturation atmosphere does not damage your picture. Nice work Sean.

Great shot, Sean but I have to agree with Tony's comments about the tones in the image.

Very dramatic, I really like the extremes in color variation. Lots going on here to keep the eye moving around. I think it works just fine as it is, the haze doesn't bother me.
