King Creek

Here is a shot from a few days ago at King Creek in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. I went back the following day hoping to catch the full moon a little lower as well as the last light hitting the mountains... but it never happened! The light was snuffed out and the creek was frozen solid! I have always had trouble making a photograph I was happy with here, but I think this one comes close.

5d II
17-40 @17mm (which I ended up cropping a little anyways!)
f/18 (for depth of field and nice star effect)
30 sec
iso 800

amazing work Wayne. Stellar processing, I like it a lot! It must have been freezing!

Thanks Michael. Ya, it was about -22 at this point. It was -25 that night and I slept in my car!

I'd be really happy with this shot. This is a very pleasing composition. I love the moonstar and glow on the ice. The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the icy twig along the lower left corner, but it's a small distraction.

Thanks Joshua. I have struggled with removing that weed in the lower left or leaving it there. In the final image I may remove it just to keep things clean. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

Beautifully composed, Wayne! This is the kind of scene that comes to my mind when I think of winter in the mountains. Cold, quiet beauty.

I love the moonlight reflection on the ice! The FG twig is a bit of a distraction but I respect your decision to leave it in. :toast:

Wayne,

What a gorgeous mountain winter landscape. Ya know, the very first impression I had was that this would make a fantastic metallic print! either printed directly on metal, laminated or presented and a transparent something or other... Very striking.

I really like these "night as day" images, Wayne. The moon's reflection in the water adds a nice character to the scene. Does that star effect happen naturally to the moon, or is that a start filter? Sure is nice.

Sorry guys, forgot to add the exif! Here it is:

5d II
17-40 @17mm (which I ended up cropping a little anyways!)
f/18 (for depth of field and nice star effect)
30 sec
iso 800

Did a little burning on the mountain, and desaturated the blues in the fg ever so slightly

Excellent comp and exposure Wayne, the light is exactly how I would imagine it to look if I was standing there with you.
