Frosty meadow

A few weeks back I posted a wider shot of this same tree in the image. I think this composition works a lot nicer within the scene.
Oh, forgot to mention, this was last winter in Yosemite. It was a little scary that morning, my good friend Lon O. and I were walking on a path trying to find a way to this meadow, when all at once Lon carrying 4x5 camera with tripod on his shoulder plus backpack slipped on some ice and went down. He had the wind knotted out of him and just laid there not saying a thing. Not a good way to start a photo trip. After a few minutes he came around, little sore but with a smile. As you know this did not stop him from taking beautiful photos on that day.
Thanks! C&C always welcome.

Well composed. Love the light and the graphic spidery lines.

Winter is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit
Yosemite. I love this image. Thanks for sharing, Kyle.

Kyle,

Hey, thanks for the story... I think. If it wasn't for the camera back on my back I no doubt would have been knocked out cold with a concussion. Ice is slippery.

Love the image Kyle! The contrast between the delicate and elegant frosted branches and the dark background is wonderful. Also, the bit of mist rising off the snow that's still visible makes it appear like the snow is giving off a bit of a glow.

The only nit/wish I have is for a bit more room above the tree. Not a big deal, but with the background being conveniently dark, you could simply add some canvas and clone in more space above the tree.

Regardless, this is a beautiful wintery image from the Valley. It's always great fun when we're there - even though I don't know how to walk.

I wasn't expecting a lot from the thumbnail, but this is really sweet. Loaded with fine detail - I'm surprised compression isn't killing this, but it looks great. I do wish it had a little more room at the top, but I can live with it as is. Love the subtle color in the trees and the dark BG.

At first sight I believed to look at a negative - there are such delicate and inspiring details. I would agree with the desire for more space above the trees, or as an alternative cropping the top more definitely.

The dark backdrop sets this scene up perfectly, Kyle. The detail on the larger version is extremely nice too.
Yep, that slippery ice thing can be treacherous. I recall an ugly crash I took in Alaska many years ago. I've never walked with my hands in my jacket pockets since.

This is a very cool image. The thumbnail sure doesn't do this any justice. Really glad I opened it up. The large version is so nice. I wish for a bit more room over the top of the forground tree also, but still this is wonderful. The dark bg really works nice here, and I love how that foreground tree is coming out of the snow.

Nice light and frost on the trees.
I'd suggest a bit more room at the top, so the tree is not cut off.
Glad you both survived! I highly recommend inexpensive ice cleats strapped onto boots when walking on ice or snow. I learned that the VERY hard way in Oregon!

Real sweet scene, Kyle. I second Lon's suggestion about cloning in some extra at the top. This image certainly warrants the effort. It is a beaut.

This is a really nice comp and I love the delicacy in the branches. Could see dodging the light branches just a bit more to really make their texture come alive.

Excellent! This is beautifully elegant, Kyle. I agree about the top being a little tight, but that's my only nit.

I love the tree, great subject! I find myself straining to see those things in the bg, which is a slight distraction, but overall this is real nice.

Wonderful, Kyle. It has an almost LF style and quality about it that really works well for me. The larger you go with this one, the more powerful it will be.
All the best for 2011 and great light wherever you go!

The dark background works very well against the foreground snow and the hint of frost/ snow on the trees. Beautiful!

A beautiful image, Kyle. I like that the snow is so white and seems to be giving off a soft glow (perhaps from fog?). I also like the isolation of the trees against the black bg and the comp overall. The soft colors are also very nice. I agree with Lon that a little more space above the tree would be nice. Take care out there!

Here's another vote for a bit more room above the trees, but otherwise I love this. I really like the way you've processed this.
