American GoldFinch

by Keith Bauer

Gallery: AvianPosted January 2, 2011230 views14 comments
This is one from Bosque Del Apache. This little one was feasting on the thistle and stopped every now and then to look around. Background is OOF grass and brush.

Cropped from a horizontal.

NR on the background.
No flash. The catchlight is from the sun.

Techs: Canon 50D, 500mm with 1.4xTC
1/2500 @ f/8, ISO 400
Handheld from the window of my vehicle.

Larger version included.

Edit: Thanks to Richard for the corrected ID. (originally posted as a Lesser Goldfinch)

The overall paleness of this bird makes me think this is an American Goldfinch and not a Lesser. The under tail coverts support this as well. I've seen both species at Bosque del Apache in previous years.

I like the clean look and the instantly recognizable colors of Bosque.

Great image. That perch is so perfect that it looks more like a back yard set up than nature. Bird is sharp with great eye contact.

Fine looking image Keith. Wonderful colors and I like the composition very much. What would the bird photographers do without Bosque!

Nice Keith. Love the perch and eye contact. DOF works and the BG is perfect for this perch and bird.
