Western Grey Kangaroo
by Chris O'Donoghue
About a half-hour walk from downtown Perth, Western Australia (my hometown) is Heirison Island, about 280,000 square meters in the middle of the Swan River. A major traffic bridge spans the river there. One side of the island has been fenced off and a small colony of Western Grey Kangaroos introduced there. A little bit of bush right near the heart of the city. This photo is from my trip home last summer.
I've been having trouble deciding on best exposure & levels settings with this one. Working on a laptop where the tiniest raising or lowering of the head alters the appearance isn't helping. I need to get a second monitor.
Nikon D300S, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 at 200mm, 1/250th sec at f/5.0, ISO 800, no flash. Full-sized original.

3 commentsYes, doing post-processing on a laptop isn't what I'd call the absolute optimal situation! That being said, I think you've done quite a good job on this image - it looks sharp, seems to have about the right amount of colour and contrast, and appears quite well exposed. I'm wondering if just a tad more opening up of the exposure in the head region (specifically around the eye) might improve the shot a little (and I do really mean just a tad - probably no more that 1/2 stop). My only other minor "nit" pertains to something outside your control - the background is a little busier than I like (personal preference)...but little you could do to control that.
Cheers and thanks for sharing this...looking forward to seeing more from you (both images and comments!) in the Fauna Gallery (nice to see another Canuck in here, but I'm a little biased!).

PS: Do you think we'll knock off Russia later today in the big game?
