Caught this Snipe (same bird as previous post) with a small killifish.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC resting on pillow out of car window
f/7.1
1/1000s
ISO 500

RAW (this was after I realized I had been shooting in .JPEG) Cropped to just 40% of original, sharpened using Smart Sharpen and USM, levels adjustment in CS5 on 27" iMac

I like the behavior capture and composition with the enviornment. It gives me a since of the bird.

Cool Luke! Wouldn't have guessed the crop, even looking at the large. I like the habitat with the slanted dead veg (?) in the background too.

Definitely good for such a large crop. Love the food in the bill.

The fish makes the image for me. Nicely done.

I rarely see a Snipe, let alone get a shot of one, and the fish is for sure an added bonus! Nice image, Luke.

I find these guys incredibly skittish, they are usually gone as soon as they see me. So good job just getting a photo and with interesting feeding behavior to boot. A slight drop in contrast, presumably from the crop, but over all a pleasing shot Luke.

I really like the fish in this Luke...my only nit is the bird doesn't have great seperation from the BG for my taste. I might have only used f/4 or f/5.6 for this shot to creat more seperation from the BG since these guys tend to blend more with thier surroundings. Also with the side profile and the large crop, either of those settings should have given you plenty of DOF.

Kurt,

Because I was using a 300 f4 + 1.7X TC max aperture was f/6.7

Well done, Luke - I don't think I've ever seen a Snipe with fish.
