My Backyard

The San Diego River after some heavy rains this year. Most of the year it's pretty stagnant. My family and I moved to an area of San Diego last year that is within minutes of Mission Trails Regional Park. My kids and I have been spending a lot of time here as of late.

South Fortuna Mtn (a hill for some of you NPN'ers) is in the bg. Otherwise, a very beautiful park so close to the city.

This was taken at sunset last night. Could of used some clouds, but I do like the contrast of mountain and dark blue sky. Plus, I can always get back before the water is gone.

Cannon 50D, 35mm focal length, f16, 0.8 sec, and either a 3 stop Soft ND Grad or a 3 stop Reverse ND Grad used (I can never remember). Processed in Aperture and PS CS4 from a single exposure.

Comments and suggestions always welcome. Thanks for looking. Enjoy!

From the thumbnail II thought I was looking at a scene in Scotland...... Nice backyard David. Nice glow on the peak and a wonderful mix of elements. I especially like the trees surrounding the mountain.

Somewhat complex comp, but I do like the light and details in the foreground.

David,

I like the main elements of the peak with the last light and also the big mashed down bed of cattails or whatever kind of reeds/grasses those are. The light is an especially nice element. For me this gets cluttered at the bottom. Of course we can't always move to a better vantage point or remove all the extraneous sticks and things from the scene, but in the end I think the bottom part takes just a little bit of simplicity away. Now I'd hate to lose the cascade, but this can be really simplified with a crop to the bottom of the reeds. For me, that leaves less competition for the beautiful light on the mountain top and think strengthens the presented image. Just a thought though for an alternative comp.

Thanks all for the comments.

Lon, shooting in SD is very challenging. I am definitely trying to simplify my images as much as possible. Thats my new years resolution.

This particular image I walked away from my vantage point three times. This is the third and final attempt at really trying to draw the viewer to the mountain and river below. I feel the trees frame the mountain peak nicely and I do agree the fg is a bit cluttered - but not as bad as my first two attempts. I will play around with your crop suggestions and see if I get anything I like. Also, this shot looks bit too contrasty - not sure if it is just suffering bad jpg compression - b/c the original file looks much better.

Thanks
